What Are Red Line Drawings?

Red line drawings — also called redlines or redline markups — are marked-up versions of existing technical drawings that show proposed changes, corrections or field modifications. The name comes from the traditional practice of annotating drawings in red pen or ink to distinguish revisions from the original linework.

In construction and engineering, red line drawings are produced throughout the project lifecycle: during design review, on-site when work deviates from the issued drawings, and during the handover process when as-built conditions need to be captured. They serve as a communication tool between design teams, site teams and clients — a record of what needs to change, or what has already changed, from the original drawing.

Red line drawings are typically marked up on paper prints, PDFs or directly within CAD software. They are not the finished article — they are the instruction set that a CAD technician uses to produce updated, issued drawings.

Redline drawings vs as-built drawings — what's the difference?
