India is the largest supplier of outsourced CAD drafting services to UK engineering and construction firms. The cost advantage is real, the technical capability is genuine, and thousands of UK projects are drafted in Indian CAD offices every year without incident.
But going direct to an Indian CAD company is not the same as commissioning a UK supplier, and the differences are not always obvious at the point of appointment. This guide covers what UK engineering firms should understand before they start — the genuine advantages, the operational realities, and the questions worth asking before you commit.

The primary driver is cost. Indian CAD drafting rates are typically a fraction of the equivalent UK cost, and for firms with high drawing volumes the saving is significant enough to change project economics.
The second driver is turnaround. The time difference means work submitted at the end of a UK working day can be produced overnight and ready for review the following morning. For firms working to tight deadlines, that overnight capacity is a genuine operational advantage rather than just a cost saving.

A drawing can be technically correct and still be wrong for your project — wrong layer structure, wrong line weights, annotation in the wrong style, title block completed incorrectly, or drawing conventions that do not match your client's requirements. A drafter who has not been trained on your specific standards will produce drawings that look right and require correction.
The only reliable answer is a documented standards manual and a structured checking process. Ask whether the brief is understood and the answer is yes. Ask whether the deadline is achievable and the answer is yes. Ask whether the team has done this type of work before and the answer is yes. The cultural instinct is to accommodate and to avoid disappointing the client by raising a concern.
This is not dishonesty. It is a genuine desire to please combined with a reluctance to flag problems early. But the practical effect is that questions do not get asked when they should be, and the gap between the confident yes and the delivered drawing is where quality problems appear.
The countermeasure is to avoid yes-or-no questions entirely. Rather than asking whether the brief is understood, ask the team to explain back what they are going to do. Rather than asking whether the deadline is achievable, ask how many hours the work will take and how that fits the available time.
Staff turnover in Indian CAD firms is higher than most UK clients expect. Drafters move between companies, relocate, or pursue further study. Each departure takes with it the accumulated knowledge of your drawing standards, your layer structure, and the unwritten conventions that only come from months working on your projects.
This cost does not appear in any price comparison. It appears in drawing quality. After a stable period where work is consistently good, drawings start coming back with errors that had not occurred for months. Someone new has joined the team and does not yet know your standards.
The mitigations are documentation and onboarding. Detailed drawing manuals, QA checklists, and a structured induction process for every new team member reduce the impact — but they take time to build and maintain, and someone has to own that work.
When engineering drawings leave the UK for processing in India, data protection obligations follow them. UK GDPR places requirements on transfers of personal data outside the UK, and engineering drawings more often contain relevant data than firms assume — site addresses, occupier details, security arrangements, and access information all appear routinely in construction and process drawings.
Beyond GDPR, there is commercial sensitivity. Plant layouts, process configurations, and site security details are commercially valuable and would be damaging in the wrong hands. The question of who has access to that information, under what terms, and with what controls is one that direct-to-India arrangements frequently leave unanswered.
Before appointing an Indian CAD provider, establish who will have access to your files, whether a data processing agreement is in place, how files are stored and transmitted, and what happens to your data when the engagement ends. For security-sensitive projects, consider whether the work should leave the UK at all.
Many Indian CAD companies advertise ISO certification, most commonly ISO 9001 for quality management systems. It is worth understanding what this does and does not tell you.
ISO 9001 certifies that an organisation has a documented quality management system and follows it. It does not certify that drawings are accurate, that staff are competent, or that your specific standards will be applied correctly. A company can hold valid ISO 9001 certification and still deliver drawings that do not meet your requirements, because the certification assesses the process, not the output.
Certification is a reasonable signal that a company takes process seriously. It is not a substitute for reviewing sample drawings, checking references, or establishing your own quality control arrangements.
The most consistently underestimated cost in direct-to-India CAD outsourcing is the UK-side checking time.
When drawings come back from an offshore team, someone in your organisation has to check them. That person is usually an experienced engineer or senior technician whose time is expensive. The checking work does not appear on the invoice from the Indian supplier, but it is a real cost and it does not disappear.
When comparing a direct-to-India quotation against a UK-managed alternative, the honest comparison includes the internal checking cost. For firms without an established checking process, it also includes the cost of building one.
