Why Architects Should Utilise 3D CAD for Big Projects

3D CAD drawings and modelling provide capabilities for architectural projects that 2D documentation cannot match — spatial coordination, design visualisation, clash detection, and the production of BIM models required on larger public sector projects. For architects working on complex or high-value projects, 3D CAD is an investment that pays for itself in reduced coordination problems and improved design communication.

Coordination and clash detection

On projects with multiple design disciplines — architecture, structure, and M&E — 3D models allow clashes between systems to be identified and resolved before construction begins. A structural beam that conflicts with a ductwork route is visible in a 3D model and can be resolved in a design meeting. The same conflict discovered on site requires on-site problem-solving that is significantly more expensive and time-consuming.

For UK projects requiring BIM Level 2 compliance, a 3D BIM model is not optional — it is a contract requirement. The model must be produced to agreed standards, coordinated with other disciplines through a Common Data Environment, and deliver COBie asset data at handover.
