When solar goes onto a housing development rather than a single home, the CAD work changes character entirely. It stops being a one-off design task and becomes a multi-site production programme: the same panel layouts, string diagrams and as-builts, repeated across dozens or hundreds of plots, delivered to the pace of the build.

This is the point at which solar drawing work starts to resemble other multi-site infrastructure — telecoms rollouts, EV charging networks — and where the same lessons about running it efficiently apply.

The development is the unit of work

On a single house, solar drawings are straightforward: one roof, one layout, one string diagram. On a development of two hundred homes across a handful of house types, the work is not two hundred separate projects — it is a programme built on a small number of repeating house types, each needing its layout defined once and applied consistently across every plot it appears on.

The firms that handle this well define the drawing standard and the house-type layouts at the start, then roll them out across the development. The firms that struggle treat each plot as a fresh drawing, which multiplies the effort and introduces inconsistency across what should be identical properties.

Consistency across plots matters

A housing development solar programme produces drawings that are used by installers on site, by the developer, by the DNO for the grid connection, and eventually by whoever maintains the systems. When every plot of the same house type is drawn identically, the whole development is legible. When plots drift — different drafters, small inconsistencies — the installer has to check each one, and the value of the repetition is lost.

Throughput has to keep pace with the build

Solar on a development is tied to the construction programme. Plots are released in phases, and the solar drawings for each phase are needed in time for installation. When several phases or several developments run at once, the drawing workload peaks, and the drawing team has to absorb that without holding up the installers.

This is the classic case for flexible outsourced capacity — scaling up when phases land together and back when the pipeline is quieter, rather than carrying a fixed in-house team sized for the peak.

Commercial and ground-mount scale differently

The same multi-site logic applies to commercial rooftop portfolios — a retailer or logistics operator rolling solar across many sites needs consistent drawings across the estate, exactly like a housing development. Ground-mount solar farms are fewer but larger, and there the value is less about repetition across sites and more about handling the scale and complexity of a single large site — the array field, the site infrastructure, the civils and the grid connection.

Where the design sits

As with any solar work, the drawing production is separate from the system design. The PV design, string sizing, inverter selection, structural loading and grid connection are engineering decisions carried out by the solar designer and electrical engineer.
