An EV charging rollout has more in common with a telecoms network build than it does with a one-off construction project. It is multi-site by nature: dozens or hundreds of locations, each needing the same drawing package, delivered to a repeating schedule as sites are acquired, designed, built and commissioned.
That shape — many similar sites, consistent deliverables, continuous throughput — is what determines whether the CAD side of a rollout runs smoothly or becomes the bottleneck. It is also a problem the telecoms industry solved years ago, and the lessons transfer directly.
The instinct on a first EV site is to treat it as a project: design it, draw it, build it. That works for one site. It does not scale to a hundred, because every site treated as a fresh project reinvents the drawing standard, the layer structure, the title block and the presentation each time.
Telecoms rollouts learned to treat the programme as the unit of work. A single drawing standard is defined once, at the start, and applied to every site. A template drawing set is built and reused. The result is that site number eighty looks exactly like site number one, which matters enormously when an operator, a landlord or a maintenance team has to read drawings from across the estate.
When every site in a network is drawn to the same standard, the whole estate becomes legible. A maintenance engineer visiting any site knows where to find the information. An operator reviewing the network sees a consistent picture. A new site added to the programme slots into the existing structure.
When sites are drawn inconsistently — different drafters, different standards, different presentation — every site becomes a small puzzle, and the cost of that shows up later, in maintenance, in expansion, and in the handover of the estate if it is ever sold or transferred.
The pace of an EV rollout is set by site acquisition and funding, not by drawing capacity. When several sites reach the drawing stage in the same week, the drawing team has to absorb that peak without becoming the thing that holds up construction.
Sizing an in-house drawing team for the peak means carrying that cost through every quieter period. This is exactly the problem outsourcing solves — drawing capacity that scales up when a cluster of sites needs drawings and scales back when the pipeline is quieter, without the fixed overhead.
On a multi-site programme, the single most useful management tool is a shared drawing register: every site listed, with its current drawing status, so the operator can see the state of the whole rollout at a glance. Telecoms rollouts run on these registers. They replace status meetings and email chasing with a live, shared view of the programme, and they are equally applicable to an EV charging network.
On a single project, the as-built drawings are a handover formality. On a growing network, they are the operational backbone. As sites are maintained, upgraded to faster chargers, expanded, or diagnosed after a fault, the as-built record is what the engineer works from. A network with reliable as-builts is far cheaper to operate than one where every maintenance visit starts by working out what is actually installed.
One boundary worth being clear about: outsourcing the drawing production does not mean outsourcing the electrical design.
